A Guide to Heels

08:06:00

A power accessory to some and a complicated one to others. Heels are a critical point in an outfit that can add an extra level of style, emphasis, or class. However, there is a right time and place to wear them and a certain style to wear too.

Different Types of Heels
First, there are different types of heels that every fashionista should know about.
*these are the most common ones to know about*
1. Wedges (thicker heel, more comfortable - far left)
2. Stilettos (very thin and tall heel, 4"- 10")
3. High Heel or Pumps (2" - 3" - centre)
4. Kitten Heel (shorter, thin heel; 1.5" - far right)
5. Platform (thick base with high heel)
6. Booties

Picking the Perfect Pair
Second, there is such a thing as picking the perfect heel. To determine that, you need to evaluate two factors: location and occasion. For location, you want to choose a heel that is best suited to the location. For example, if you are going to an outdoor event with grass, you'll want to choose wedges because if you had a thin heel, it would sink in the grass. This rule goes for many outdoor occasions as well. If you are somewhere indoors, you want to be careful with the heel you choose because if the floors are slippery, you shouldn't choose a super thin heel if you are not fully comfortable walking in those shoes. In terms of occasion, you should pick the pair of heels that best suits the formality of the event. This means that you should wear thicker heels (wedges, heeled booties) to more casual events which could include small parties or everyday wear. To more formal events, one should wear the sparklier, thin heels to match the theme of the event. Remeber that accessories and shoes always count when it comes to styling an outfit, even if they may be hidden.

Walking in Heels
Third, you have to know how to walk properly in your heels. Here are some do's and don'ts when it comes to walking in your heels:
1. DO practice walking in them before you wear them out
2. DON'T buy and go
3. DO walk heel to toe (shifting the weight from heel to toe as you walk)
4. DON'T walk toe to heel or else your balance may be off
5. DO focus on your posture and keep a relatively straight back
6. DON'T slouch while walking in your heels
7. DO take in slow while walking - going too fast could cause you to slip
8. DO hold the railing as you go up and down the stairs, again taking it slow
9. DO pack a pair of flats in your purse if you have a long night ahead of you
