19 Things I've Learned in 19 Years

06:58:00

Another year has passed and I have got a whole new list of things that I learned to share!

1.  Do everything you do in kindness
I’ve talked about this before, but you should always do things in kindness. It is better for you and for everything around you to have this outlook.

2. Find opportunity in change
This past year, I have made the biggest changes in my life yet. Struggling with change is no stranger to me. I went through a difficult time with the big changes in my life this year, but when I took time to adapt, I begin finding opportunities in my situation and I am a lot better off for it.

3. Make time for your health (and prioritize it!)
You are responsible for your own health and you cannot do anything if you are unhealthy. You need to make sure that you are in a good state before you get back to your normal routine or heavy workloads.

4. Study smarter, not harder
A little lesson you learn from being a university student. I always thought I did this, but you honestly do not learn the importance of this until midterms or finals weeks. Do not waste time writing long notes but instead, spend time working on the crucial information you need more review on. You do not have time to waste!

5. Learn to forgive and move forward
Holding grudges is good for no one. Make your peace with a situation and move forward. Sometimes, you cannot rush this, but moving forward the sooner you can will quit any unnecessary and prolonged anguished. It can be hard to forgive when you feel like you can't. Take some space for yourself to do so, but at least try doing things to move forward and analyze what you can learn from what happened. It is always best to take the high road.

6.  See a setback as an opportunity for growth rather than something negative
Life throws you curveballs all the time. Sometimes, you can control them and sometimes, you can't. Instead of dwelling on what happened or complaining, learn from what happened, try to fix it, and move on. You can never grow if you let these things hold you back. It is when you keeping trying to overcome whatever curveballs you get that will show you the real results.

7. Do not stop being a good person just because of bad people
There are a lot of people that do horrible things and sometimes, that can really impact you. However, it is so important not to give in to these people and stay firm in your values and your ways.

8. You are not going to get any work done if you are in a bad mood
If I am anxious or just overwhelmingly sad from a horrible day or situation, I need to take a break. If you are in a bad mental state, do not push yourself because then you won't actually get anything done, you will just stress yourself out more. Take a break and take it easy on yourself. Even just having a good cry will make you feel better. You will come back from your break ready to work and you will get more work done faster than you would've if you were in a bad mental state.

9. If something bothers you, don’t hold it in.
Do not be scared to hold in your emotions. If you don't speak up, nothing will change. The more you speak up when something is bothering you, the more good change can come from it. That is the only way for you to not feel like that.

10. Smile more to people (even if you don't know them that well)
Maybe it is someone from one of your classes that you see in passing or the barista that you've seen a few times. People appreciate smiles and warm up to you more. You seem more approachable and it creates a good vibe for everyone!

11. Do not complain if you can fix the situation
This is a golden rule. If there is something to be done about a situation that bugs you, stop complaining and get to work. It will be better for everyone around you and yourself.

12. Learn from others
People are extraordinary and there is so much that can be learned from one another. I don't necessarily mean just learning from a teacher or another student, I mean learning people's behaviours and how people act to certain things. It could be a lot different from the basic ideas of what you believe to be normal and it will teach you a lot. So pay attention to others, you may observe more than you think.

13. Do not let insignificant people determine how you see yourself
I struggled with this many times this year and it nearly destroyed my sense of self. If people are completely irrelevant to you and your goals, why would you let them make you feel less about yourself? This is a waste of your time.

14. Love comes in many forms
First, know what is the difference between real love and just attention. Secondly, understand that love is not just something from a relationship or a person. Love can describe a passion for a craft or a feeling about an interest. Love can also be more detailed than just a person; it can be something a person does, the way they are who they are, or even their personality. Identify that and protect that love at all costs.

15. Do not let people’s negativity hold you back from doing what you love
You do you, no one has any right to (try to) take something away from you that you love. If it makes you happy, do it and do it boldly. Rid yourself of the people in your life that don't support you and anyone else who are making these comments are clearly not relevant and are most likely just bored or jealous. Listen to your wants, not anyone else's.

16. Success is the best revenge
I mean revenge is never the answer, but do not think hurting the person will get them back. Growing as a person and leading a successful life shows that you are the bigger person and you have taken more from it.

17. Accept people’s help and recognize when you need it
"You do not need to do everything on your own" This was something I was told many times this year. I like to be fully responsible for everything in my life and I like to take control of what is in my power to control. Sometimes, asking for help is exactly what you need. There are just some things you can not take all on yourself.

18. If you are going through hell, keep going
Even if it may seem like nothing will get better, it will. I promise, even if it seems impossible. I was at a point in my life this year where I thought my life would never turn around and that situation lasted for a long time. I am an overly hopeful person at times, but that spark was almost gone. Just when I thought it was never going to get better, it did. You just have to hang in there and find the best in each day to get through to your happy ending.

19. Know who you are and do not let anyone push you around
Stand firm in who you are, what you want, and what you want to do. No one has any right to make those decisions for you or make you feel a certain way that is against how you should feel about yourself. So don't let them.

The lessons I have learned in the past year has brought back apart of me that I thought I had lost, but everyone needs to go through change to become better and stronger.

xx

Update: thank you for all the birthday wishes! :)
